I Tried Ethical Deodorant and This is What I Learned

Switching to zero-waste products shouldn’t mean having to make painful sacrifices to your lifestyle. Going zero-waste or even just gradually incorporating more ethical products into your daily life sounds like a lot of work, but provided that you choose the right replacement items for your personal needs, there is no need to inconvenience yourself. Personally, I like it when I come across conscious, zero-waste items that add to my life rather than take away, and that’s how I feel about Coconut Matter’s Mood deodorants. This line of Mood deodorants from Coconut Matter are perfect for anybody who is looking for an effective vegan and cruelty-free deodorant suitable for sensitive skin, free from harmful chemicals, and comes in its own attractive biodegradable packaging.

The Problem With Most Deodorants…

How ethical is your deodorant? It wasn’t until recently that I realised how much deodorants contribute to the huge issue of non-biodegradable waste. Deodorant is generally a cosmetic item that the majority of us use, but one we rarely discuss. I think that because we don’t discuss deodorant as much as we do other cosmetics, we also skip the conversation about the waste associated with this product. When I recently teamed up with the Coconut Matter team to work on this project, they prompted me to think about how much waste we produce by using deodorant. Subsequently, I learned more about the ingredients in most standard deodorants and their product packaging. It is safe to say it was quite eye-opening! I was shocked to learn how such a small and simple self-care product was a concise container of so many harmful chemicals. Not only are typical antiperspirants harmful to the environment because their packaging isn’t biodegradable or easily recycled, but their ingredients are also potentially damaging to both humans and the environment. We have a long way to go when it comes to battling waste but every little ethical swap we make counts! Unfortunately, product packaging from everyday cosmetics including shampoos, liquid hand soap, deodorants, etc. is a notable contributor to this waste problem. In this post I am going to show you how easy it is to switch over to deodorant that is kinder to both you and the environment.

My Carbon Footprint in Deodorants

Usually, purchasing ethical products works out more expensive than buying mainstream alternatives. I accept this without any complaints because first of all, they are better for the environment and secondly, I understand that conscious goods often cost more for companies to make in the first place. Surprisingly, this set of 4 deodorants from Coconut Matter is a 12 month supply, making them highly cost-effective!

The other, more important issue is the environmental cost of wearing deodorant. Of course, you don’t have to give up deodorant for good in order to save the planet, but have you ever worked out how many deodorants you get through in 1 year? Some people will use more; others less.  I would say that as a deodorant consumer I am an average user. I go through 1 stick deodorant every 2 months, which is 6 per year. In terms of environmental footprint for the UK alone, this would equate to 797, 280, 000 deodorants per year! This is why it is important to switch to an ethical alternative. Not only to lower the quantity of deodorant products you get through over the course of a year, but also to eliminate further damage from non-biodegradable product packaging and the harmful chemicals in standard deodorants.

About Coconut Matter

Coconut Matter is an ethical social and beauty enterprise. This conscious brand is on a mission to reduce the plastic waste in your bathroom. Coconut Matter state: “Only 1 in 5 people recycle toilet rolls. In the U.S alone we could fill 1, 164 football pitches just with the waste from soap bottles!” That’s an astonishing number and if that isn’t a wakeup call, I don’t know what is?! The problem is that only 50% off bathroom product waste is recycled, yet in 2018 the beauty sector was reported to have manufactured over 142 billion units of packaging. The first bathroom beauty product that Coconut Matter is focusing on is deodorants. Standard deodorants may be small and easy to overlook, but they’re carbon footprint is huge! They don’t last long. It’s almost impossible to use up the entire available product because of its packaging style. And to top it off, few people bother to recycle these environmentally unfriendly items. Coconut Matter produce high quality vegan, cruelty-free deodorants, made from just 18 plant-based ingredients. All of their deodorants, whether scented or not, are free from aluminium, no baking soda, no paragons, no phthalates, and are toxin-free.

My Thoughts on Using these Ethical Mood Deodorants from Coconut Matter

Whenever I start using a new product I always approach it with an open-mind. Before working with Coconut Matter and sampling their naturally-made Mood deodorants, I had begun to hear a lot of people praising ethical deodorants. I always find it interesting when people switch over to using ethically-made cosmetics for reasons other than just being a conscious consumer. I strive to choose zero-waste and cruelty-free alternatives at every available opportunity. However, there have been times when I have came across products that I would only choose to use because of their ethical status rather than their quality or performance. So, when I see individuals choosing a vegan, waste-free beauty product just because they prefer it, I think that’s a great sign and shows how amazing these items are.

Personally, I love fragrance, but I am aware that some fragrances contain harmful chemicals. Apart from the cute, attractive product packaging of the Mood deodorants, I immediately fell in love with the way they smell! I was sent four deodorants, which is the equivalent to 1 year’s worth of deodorant. Coconut Matter created these longer-lasting deodorants because they wanted to reduce the carbon footprint of the product itself and not just the packaging. One of the four stick deodorants is scent-free, but the other three have lovely light aromas owing to their naturally-scented ingredients. The four deodorants available are:

  • Eucalyptus, peppermint and rosemary
  • Cedarwood, bergamot and vetiver
  • Lavender, geranium and lime
  • Scent-free

I am thoroughly impressed with these products. Not only do they smell amazing and come in convenient, paper sticks – making them easy to pack and take with you on the go. They’re also effective and last for up to 24 hours. They don’t leave unsightly white marks on your clothes, they’re easy to apply, comfortable to wear, no stickiness and leave your skin feeling silky smooth instead of drying out your skin like some standard antiperspirant products do. It’s definitely got me converted and I’d highly recommend you to consider switching over too!
